LBW 2nd XI vs Hastings Priory 26th April 2009
Another heavy defeat for LBW2 against Hastings and St Leonards Priory and a little more disappointing than the previous week's encounter with Stoke D'Abernon.
Hastings won the toss and chose to field on a sunny day at the William Parker Sports College ground with distant views of the Channel.
More than half the young Hastings side had Sussex county experience, and accurate bowling put LBW, who could only field nine players,on the back foot from the start.
Accurate swing bowling from Melissa Ferguson restricted runs, and Cheryl Beech and Zoe Sturgess managed just 13 by the seventh over when Zoe was bowled by a Ferguson in-swinger for one.
Cheryl, captain, played steadily, and hit a boundary off Ferguson in her stoic innings of nine. A straight ball from Lara Whittaker hit Maddie's boot on the full and she was given out LBW for one.
Ferguson took two more wickets – Aly Horn and Charlea Phipps both bowled - to end with figures of 4 – 11. Only Lucy Horton, a former Mote player making her debut for LBW, showed any resistance, playing with style and hitting a boundary before she was unlucky to be caught for seven.
LBW were all out for 30 in the 16th over, with just 18 runs coming off the bat.
There was a glimmer of hope for LBW when Cheryl bowled opener Claire Hayden first ball but skipper Natasha Newman and Chloe Edmonds easily reached the modest total in 4.3 overs to win by nine wickets.
As the match had finished just after 2.30pm, and it was such a lovely day, both sides agreed to a 20-over friendly, which Hastings – 97 off 20 - won by 11 runs.
But LBW could take heart from a better performance in more relaxed circumstances, with some welcome fielding help from three senior males, one of whom took a stunning one-handed running catch just inside the boundary.

Match Summary and report:
It looks like a hammering on paper, and in many ways it was, but LBW2 can take some pride in their gritty rearguard performance against one of the division's crack teams.
LBW2 fielded 7 players, augmented by Stoke's Angelina Murphy who fielded well.
Stoke D'Abernon fielded mainly Surrey county players developed over many years through the county system. There was a class divide.
Stoke D'Abernon batted first and after an early breakthrough by Zoe Sturgess, who bowled Rosie McEwing's off stump for six, Sophie Pout and Claire Trafford put on 98 for the second wicket partnership.
Shottie Hopkins then tempted Pout to pull a ball to deep backward square leg where Zoe took a sharp chance.
But Trafford was imperious, lashing bounderies and sixes in a batting masterclass that eventually took her to 213 not out.
Captain Amy Page looked set for a century when, on 98, she miscued the last ball of the innings to Cheryl Beech at short mid-off. By this time Stoke D'Abernon had amassed a huge total of 406-3 from their 40 overs.
In reply Cheryl and Zoe showed grit to resist good bowling for 16 overs, putting on 26 for the opening partnership before Zoe (9) scooped a ball to Page at mid-off.
Captain Cheryl, who led the team well, continued to dig in and stayed until the 22nd over when she was finally caught to a juggling catch at gully for 8.
Aly Horn showed similar grit and determination holding out until the 33rd over when she was bowled by spinner Binns for 5.
The innings ended when Emily Cooper, playing her first competitive match, was bowled by McEwing, leaving LBW2 on 42-7.
LBW2 showed true guts and determination to not let their heads drop throughout this one sided affair and for that they should hold their heads up high and get ready to bounce back in their next game.
